Kitkat is smoother by any mean ,
The big advantage is ART runtime in developer settings.
It is just incompatible with whatsapp however there is workaround in xda.-developers forum

There are lots of tool kits ,but I think your problem is with the super user version ,you need the version compatibles with 4.3
However I think the only benefit from kernels is the color changes,but the speed change I think it is useless
Also the battery was good when I used it in 4.2 -

Vlc supports 4.3
I can see most of users here are more conservative in using their phone however the beauty of Android is its customization
I think an iPhone would be a nice phone for them -
